Even if the number of girls who choose STEM studies moves slowly, companies have the opportunity to work to strengthen the position of those girls who have already made the STEM choice. For example, companies can choose to accompany female engineering students in their approach to the world of work, helping them to acquire greater awareness, so that they are increasingly prepared for the relational dynamics in business contexts, which often hide gender unaware bias.
In 2019 Moviri, a global software and professional services company in Analytics, Performance Engineering, IoT and Security, and the Career Service of Politecnico di Milano, an office that builds a bridge between the university and the world of work, co-designed the "Women Mentoring by Moviri" path. The project had already been consolidated with two previous successful experiences with two companies. Career Service of Politecnico di Milano, office that builds a bridge between the university and the world of work, have co-designed the route “Women Mentoring by Moviri”. The project had already been consolidated with two previous successful experiences with two companies.
The mentoring path held by Moviri's professionals has allowed 20 female students of the Master's degree courses in Engineering and Design to understand and reflect on the role of the consultant and the challenges she can face in her career path, also with respect to being a woman.
After the launch event on September 24, 2019, the course included six meetings in which the girls learned how to exploit problem solving, communication and public speaking effectively in the world of work, enhancing themselves.
We met a student who participated in the course and told us: "the experiences and advice of the mentors are not to be taken for granted and also the meeting with girls from the Politecnico from areas totally different from mine was useful, as well as enjoyable, to see/live another aspect of the University, to compare and test the skills of team working".
The Career Service of Politecnico di Milano every semester organizes Women Mentoring courses in collaboration with different companies, for more information see the events calendar.
